I didn’t know what I was supposed to be doing when I left school.

I was aimless.

I needed encouragement or a kick up the arse to make the next step.

I got one but not the other.

So I got enrolled on an art course at a local college.

the course was rubbish. the students bored and listless.

but I was there long enough to get my first taste of photography.

ART FOUNDATION

second

try

after the disapointment of the first course,
I got a place on the arts foundation course in my home county.  somewhere teaching art but with a better reputation.

I wasn’t aware of it at the time, but my dad had been a student at St.Albans decades before.

I was following his lead.

1981/2

“it was a good decision”

the students came from all over the county and everyone had to undergo an interview and a portfolio review. I was grilled but I wasn’t nervous.

the questions asked by tutor and painter Graham Boyd were detailed & perceptive.

once I was accepted I immediatly felt I belonged on that course. I was ready to hurl myself into the challenge.

I couldn't stop working.  I didn’t want to stop working. everything was a challenge.
